It’s Christmas season! And that reminds me…

Yep, it’s “the most wonderful time of the year.” Time for family, celebration, Santa Claus, and good times.
However, when I was in sales, I didn’t particularly look forward to Christmas. It meant that prospects would be hard to reach and even harder to close. It meant that I’d be traveling back east to spend the holiday with my family and miss out on valuable selling time. In the end, it meant a miniscule commission check in the one month of the year that I spent the most money.
My sales manager hated it too. John was always perturbed that the entire office packed up for a week and went “home” to spend Christmas with family (I was working in Las Vegas at the time, the one city in America that officially has no natives). He’d always lament that we could all have the best month of the year because prospects needed to spend corporate budgets in order to keep them the following year, but none of us were around to make any sales.
And that brings me to my point: There’s no “best” time to make sales.
Many salespeople and managers will tell you that the first week of the month is the best time to sell. Others will tell you that the final week is best. Some will say first quarter is bad, others will tell you that it’s the best.
The fact of the matter is that there is no “best” time to sell. The best time to sell is right now. Here. Today. Whatever day of the week it is, week of the month, or month of the year, that is the best time to sell.
In a previous post, Stop Selling By The Month, I explained that top sales producers don’t care how many days are left in the month. They wake up and it’s today. They do the same thing each and every day, no matter if it’s the 1st of the month or the 31st, or Christmas season or the middle of July.
The bottom line is consistency = sales success. Be consistent and you’ll succeed. Don’t listen to the naysayers who say this is not the best time to sell, because it’s always the best time to sell!
